When Uptown Ankeny Flips On Its Holiday Lights, The Shops Stay Open To Meet You

When does Uptown Ankeny's holiday season actually start? It has a set day. The first night of Uptown Wonderlights falls on Friday, November 13. The first switch-on is timed to Champagne & Mistletoe, the evening when Uptown shops stay open late to kick off holiday shopping.

The lights then stay on every night at sunset through Thursday, December 31. That's 49 evenings of free displays. Only two of those nights have a full program attached. Once you see how those two Fridays bracket the season, planning everything in between gets much easier.

The switch has landed on a Friday three years running

The Ankeny Area Chamber of Commerce describes the tradition plainly. Every year, the displays light up for the first time on the same night as Champagne & Mistletoe. The dates back that up:

  1. 2024: displays lit from November 8, a Friday, the same night as that year's Champagne & Mistletoe.
  2. 2025: Catch Des Moines listed the season as November 14 through December 31. November 14 was also a Friday.
  3. 2026: Travel Iowa lists Friday, November 13 through Thursday, December 31.

The start date moves a few days each year. The end date stays fixed at New Year's Eve. So "the second Friday-ish of November" is a better rule of thumb than any single date, and whichever Friday it lands on, the shops, the carriages and the lights all start that evening.

The turnaround that makes it possible is fast. The Chamber says that once October 31 passes, the Fright Lights displays come down and the Wonderlights displays go up, with help from a large group of community volunteers. This year that leaves less than two weeks between Halloween and the first switch-on.

Opening night: Champagne & Mistletoe, Friday, November 13

Uptown's event page lists Champagne & Mistletoe for November 13, 5 to 8 p.m., centered at 601 SW 3rd Street. Participating businesses offer a toast, a treat and special deals. Community State Bank is the co-host.

The detail that matters most for planning is the carriage ride. Opening night is the one evening when you can see the brand-new displays from a horse-drawn carriage. Here's what to know before you go:

  • Pickup and drop-off: Ankeny Historical Society, 301 SW 3rd Street. You start and finish at the same spot.
  • Tickets: sold on site only. There's no advance purchase.
  • Price: $10 per rider. Kids 3 and under ride free.
  • Payment: cash and Venmo.

Uptown's page describes the route as a ride through newly lit Wonderlights displays and stores in their holiday finery. On this one night, the stores and the light displays are part of the same outing, which is the whole idea behind pairing the first switch-on with the shopping kickoff.

The Champagne & Mistletoe page doesn't print a year next to "November 13." That date does match the 2026 Wonderlights start, and it's a Friday, which fits the pattern above. Check the Uptown Ankeny event page the week of to confirm the carriage hours before you head out.

The map you'll be walking

Uptown Ankeny puts the display count at more than 50 animated light displays. They sit in and around six blocks of SW 3rd Street and throughout Ankeny Market & Pavilion Park. Travel Iowa's 2026 listing adds a third piece of the route: displays along the High Trestle Trail.

Two pieces anchor the layout:

The light tunnel. In past seasons the tunnel has spanned the High Trestle Trail. That makes the trail one of the main ways into the display, so you can arrive by bike rather than only cutting through on foot.

The 25-foot show tree. The Chamber's 2024 write-up said the tree ran a light show set to music every 30 minutes. Treat that as the past pattern and allow some flexibility in case the 2026 timing differs.

In 2024 the Chamber described the footprint as SW 3rd Street from SW Logan to SW Scott, plus SW Maple through the park. Take that as a rough outline rather than a guarantee for this year.

How you arrive changes the experience. Organizers designed it for walking, biking or driving through. KCCI noted that drivers can come in from South Ankeny Boulevard or West First Street, and cyclists can take the High Trestle Trail through the displays. Arriving by trail puts the light tunnel on your route.

Mullets Uptown Ankeny is the 2026 presenting sponsor. The Uptown Ankeny Association and the City of Ankeny run the attraction together. Individual displays carry logo signs from the area businesses that sponsor them. If you walk the route slowly, you'll be reading a directory of local sponsors as you go.

The nights in between

Between the two programmed Fridays sit weeks of lit evenings. There are no carriages, no Santa and no ticket table, just the displays, free, starting at sunset. These evenings work best for a short walk after dinner, a slow drive with grandparents in the back seat, or a bike loop through the tunnel. The Chamber suggests any night of the run works for shopping and dining in Uptown before heading over to the lights.

Thanksgiving week adds one more fixed point to the calendar. The Ankeny Turkey Trot 5K runs Thanksgiving morning, Thursday, November 26, at 2006 S Ankeny Blvd, according to its race listing. If you have family in town that week, you could do the run in the morning and an evening drive through Uptown after the holiday meal.

Closing party: Miracle On 3rd Street

The second programmed Friday is the bigger one. Travel Iowa lists Miracle On 3rd Street for Friday, December 11, 2026, from 5 to 7:30 p.m. The festivities spread along SW 3rd, Walnut, Maple and Cherry streets, surrounded by the Wonderlights displays.

The listed lineup puts named local groups in charge of each stop:

  • Santa's reindeer, sponsored by the City of Ankeny
  • Visits with Santa
  • Santa's Workshop crafts with The Ankeny Art Center
  • A live nativity presented by Ankeny First United Methodist Church
  • Rides through the lights on the Uptown Express
  • A gingerbread bouncy house and hot cocoa stops around the event area
  • Uptown shops open late
  • A snowfall around the show tree at 7:30 p.m. to close the night

Lamberti, Murphy and Strong Law is the listed presenting sponsor.

Where opening night centers on shopping and carriage rides, this lineup leans toward kids, with reindeer, crafts, a bounce house and that timed snowfall, while the late shop hours carry over from November.

Check the closing-party date before you go

The two listings for Miracle On 3rd Street don't agree. Travel Iowa's dated 2026 listing says December 11, 5 to 7:30 p.m., with snowfall at 7:30. Uptown Ankeny's own Miracle On 3rd Street page shows December 4, 5 to 8 p.m., with no year attached, and gives a 7 p.m. snowfall. Both dates fall on a Friday in 2026. The two pages also disagree on when the snowfall happens, so check the time too.

Use December 11 for now. Recheck Uptown's page in late November before you promise anyone a reindeer visit. If you're planning around the snowfall, the half-hour difference between the listings is the detail to confirm.
